Paperback Writer

Help me decide – does the cover match the storyline?

A skeleton is unearthed on a building site close to the docks in Garston. Anne, a fledgling reporter, is assigned to what should be a routine story. Her friend Vinny, starting a postgrad degree, is plagued by nightmares and visions of death. As he struggles to overcome his demons, he and Anne uncover the secrets connecting a Liverpool/Irish gang, a vanished father and the war in Ireland. Despite threats and warnings Anne’s reporting and Vinny’s research help them to unravel the threads of police corruption and murder – and their feelings for each other.

In the 1950s Michael and Paddy, Irish-born immigrants, begin as friends and colleagues but through the sixties and seventies their paths diverge as they struggle to integrate into English society. Underlying the issues of nationality, class, and identity that all characters have to face is the issue of power – what it is and who holds it.

Liverpool plays a central role in Under the Bridge; its history of immigration, union struggles, and social unrest make it as complex as any character. Murder, suicide, deceit and personal tragedy over a span of 60 years are the human elements that bind the social, and political in this historical drama.

  1. I feel like it fits the tone and story. I like the use of red and orange. Hope it works for you.

  2. I’d use a pic of the actual bridge going under. It makes it more believable.

    1. working on it
