I was born and raised in Speke Liverpool although my parents first lived ‘Under The Bridge’ in Garston, my father was born in Wicklow, Ireland, and my mum in King St Garston.
The Liverpool Mystery series are three novels; Under The Bridge, Across The Water, and Before the Storm. These books trace 100 years in the ebb and flow of lives between Liverpool and Ireland.
Preceding all of these is The One Road, a novella and a collection of shorter pieces featuring many of the characters that appear in the later books.
My writing is in the spirit of Jack London, Upton Sinclair, B Travern, Steinbeck, and of course Robert Noonan better known as Tressell, while not claiming their skill or talent I do share the aim of writing to express the lives and struggles of working people. When I was 12 or 13 my older shop steward brother gave me a copy of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists to spread the word about the fight for a fairer society.
We are still in that fight and as a reader you have a part to play.
I hope my books can be shared among families, friends, and colleagues as grains of sand thrown in the gears of oppression.
Burning Down the House is the first novel in my new trilogy The Red Detective Series, discover how an LFC supporter Charlie becomes The Red Detective. If like me you are tired of ‘hero cops’ who solve every crime, in Burning Down the House you can meet Charlie a Scouser who solves crimes against people on the streets of Liverpool, while attempting to resolve crimes against his class and humanity.

Some early reviews Burning Down The House
Loved it. Unputdownable, five star read. Bloody Brilliant. Kind of feel sad that I read it so quick, but I couldn’t stop. Such a gripping, twisted read! Multi-layered brilliance! Exceptional! Natalie Freeman @Natfree37
I’ve just finished this book by Jack Byrne.
It has everything. Set in Liverpool the novel tells a story of murder and police corruption. Against a backdrop of climate change protests, and the relationship of XR and working class people, racism, immigration, religion and football. This has the lot and I was actually nervous reading the last 30 pages, it has twists and turns all the way through it.
A superb book. Phil Rowan London region RMT political officer.

Facing police violence and threatened by climate change, a cast of young characters find they need to change themselves before they can change the world.
When climate activist Matt Whitney, dies in police custody, Charlie Connolly has his life turned upside down after he gives a witness statement. Embroiled in the turmoil of climate politics and targeted by a rogue policeman, Charlie struggles to find his place in the world. But there are more immediate threats to his life than global warming.
As thousands of schoolkids demonstrate for their future, Charlie and his friend, Amina, follow the clues to unravel the tragic backstory of Matt Whitney’s life and death.

Before the Storm
On the day after the Bexit vote Historian Vinny Connolly tries to escape the bitter memories of his childhood in a tough neighbourhood. But a secret from the past, involving a pocket watch, an old man’s death, and childhood friends, threatens to unravel his present. When one of those friends, Sammo, dies in mysterious circumstances, Vinny, his wife Helen, and his ex-partner Anne McCarthy race against time to uncover the truth. A hit and run incident, text messages, and a murdered pet, all warn Vinny away from the investigation. A series of letters hold the key to Sammo’s life, and the secret to unlock the mystery of his death. Facing unexpected obstacles and police opposition Anne tries to overcome an accidental death verdict.
In post-Brexit UK, this is a gripping tale of immigration, friendship, the power of secrets to shape our lives, and the value of resistance to authority.
Reviews
Me and mybookshelf ……….an exhilarating addition to the Liverpool Mysteries, set against the backdrop of a post Brexit United Kingdom. This gripping story seamlessly weaves between two timelines, 1981 and 2016, leaving readers on the edge of their seats.
I adored the commentary on a post-brexit Britian and how it has indeed changed the landscape, not literally but figuratively. He just gets it and can put it down in words in such a brutally honest yet beautiful way.

‘One thing Byrne is masterful at is political and social commentary’.

The setting of this book feels very real. It’s not glamourised or exaggerated, but very round in the realistic vibe of the times. I’ve never been to Liverpool but I really enjoy it when an author shows us both the beauty and the ugly side of a place.
