Facing police violence and climate change, a cast of young characters find they need to change themselves before they can change the world.
When climate activist, Matt Whitney dies in police custody, Charlie Connolly’s life is turned upside down after giving a witness statement. Embroiled in the turmoil of climate politics and targetted by a rogue policeman, Charlie struggles to find his place in the world. But there are more immediate threats to his life than global warming.
As thousands of schoolkids demonstrate for their future, Charlie, and his friend Amina follow the clues to unravel the tragic backstory of Whitney’s life and death.
The dedication for this book is below;
To all who have thrown sand.
Wherever you are, whatever sand you can throw in the gears of genocide, do it now. If it’s a handful, throw it. If it’s a fingernail full, scrape it out and throw it. Get in the way however you can.

I see my writing in the tradition of socialist literature that runs through the likes of Jack London, Upton Sinclair, B Travern, Steinbeck and of course Robert Noonan better known as Tressell, while not claiming their skill or talent I do share the aim of writing to express the lives and struggles of working people. When I was 12 or 13 my older shop steward brother gave me a copy of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists to spread the word about the fight for a fairer society. We are still in that fight and I hope my books can be shared among families, friends, and colleagues as grains of sand thrown in the gears of oppression.
